Presence passed directly — in satsang, a glance, a touch, or sheer proximity
Direct contact with a teacher — sitting in their presence, receiving a glance, a touch, or transmission in satsang — appears in one in four accounts. The mechanism isn't well understood, but accounts consistently describe it as a direct transmission of presence rather than conceptual understanding.
The teacher named most often is Papaji (H.W.L. Poonja), followed by Gangaji, Adyashanti, and Ramana Maharshi. What seems to happen isn't teaching in the ordinary sense — it's more like one flame lighting another.
How does inquiry work?" And finally, a little bit more on his question, "How can one have confidence they are doing the inquiry in the way that the lineage of Ramana, Papaji, etc., teaches?" He has to confront with the Master, with satsang, a life.
And I've had a lot of great teachers, including Ramana, but there's no one for me who compares to the crystal clarity of Nisargadatta, to his transmission through "I Am That," which is remarkable.
Now, as Papaji, I see in the beginning of a satsang, sometimes I'm really, very often I'm inspired, even if it is short, to say something.
>>Rick: I really think it is and I have given a lot of thought to it and talked about it with a lot of people because there are so many teachers, some of whom are really impressive, you know they have really attained a very high state, you sit in their presence and you feel very profound darshan.
