What people turned to in the months and years afterwards to steady themselves, from reading and meditation to teachers, community, therapy and simply letting time pass, across people.
Every account here was read twice, once by each of two independent readers working from the same written rules. On the other sections of this site, several features were described clearly enough that both readers drew the same line. On this one, not a single one was.
That is not a flaw in the reading. It is what the question is like. Whether someone "had a teacher" or "did meditation" or "gave it time" depends on where you decide a practice starts and a habit ends, and two careful readers put that line in different places. You can see it in the bars below: every one has a long pale tail.
So treat the figures here as the shape of something rather than a measurement of it. The ordering is probably right. The exact numbers are not.
The solid bar is where both readers agreed. The pale bar runs on to where at least one of them saw it. A short tail means they saw the same thing. A long tail means they did not, and the number should be held lightly.
The categories above were fixed before the reading began, which is the only way to keep two readers comparable. It also means anything without a category could not be recorded, however often people mentioned it. Medication is the clearest gap: several accounts discuss it and there was nowhere to put it, so this page cannot tell you whether medication helped, hurt, or made no difference. Sleep, diet, exercise and stopping work are in the same position. We can say that these were not counted. We cannot say they were rare.
